5 Musts on trips to Sri Lanka

Some of the key highlights to consider when planning your trip to Sri Lanka:

  • Sigiriya Lion Rock Fortress: This ancient royal palace was built in the 5th century on the summit of a massive stone rock nearly 400 meters high, providing breathtaking panoramic views of the jungle and plains of Sri Lanka. It is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating and photographed places in the country, a must-visit on trips to Sri Lanka.
  • Temple of the Tooth of Buddha: Sri Dalada Maligawa is one of the holiest places in Sri Lanka, as according to the Sinhalese, this temple houses a tooth relic of Buddha. Built in Kandy in the 18th century, it is an architectural masterpiece showcasing typical features of Sri Lankan Buddhist architecture.
  • Yala National Park: Located in the southeast of the island, Yala Park is considered the best park in Sri Lanka, known for its high density of leopards. In addition to leopards, it’s easy to spot elephants, water buffaloes, deer, and crocodiles, making it a must-visit destination for wildlife enthusiasts.
  • Dambulla Golden Temple: A UNESCO World Heritage site, this temple is essential for meditation and Buddhist teachings. Comprising a complex of caves with over 150 Buddha statues, it has been used as a place of worship since the 1st century BCE. If you’re planning to travel to Sri Lanka, make sure not to miss it.
  • Galle Fort: Built by the Portuguese in the 16th century and expanded by the Dutch in the 17th century, it is one of the best-preserved fortresses in South Asia. Offering a unique blend of colonial architecture and contemporary charm, it has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Flights to Sri Lanka

Colombo

Although there are several international airports in Sri Lanka, Bandaranaike Airport, located 35km north of Colombo, is undoubtedly the main entry airport to the island and the one where the main airlines operate.

SriLankan Airlines is the national airline of Sri Lanka. The country also has several domestic airports that operate some international flights, but their main operation is focused on domestic flights.

Flying in a small plane in Sri Lanka, just like flying in a hot air balloon in Sri Lanka, is an experience we definitely recommend. The aerial views of the island’s mountains are fascinating.

What is the best time to travel to Sri Lanka?

When to travel to Sri Lanka??

Sri Lanka has a tropical climate with warm temperatures throughout the year due to its proximity to the equator. The country’s average temperature throughout the year is 27ºC.

The Nuwara Eliya district is rainier and cooler. In fact, Nuwara Eliya is called “Little England” because of its climate and colonial architecture. Similarly, the central highlands, such as Kandy, are cooler due to the altitude. These mountainous areas are an exception to Sri Lanka’s overall climate, with temperatures that can drop to 20ºC.

Between May and October, the eastern part of the island experiences a drier climate, while from November to April, there is less rain on the West and South coasts.

Any month of the year is a good time to travel to Sri Lanka, as tours cover different points of the island. In general, you can expect sunny weather almost every day, except when visiting the mountainous region and some of its lateral coasts. However, you will always find good weather on the opposite side. Similarly, if you are looking for a beach vacation in Sri Lanka, you will always find beach areas with good weather.
