Observatory of Kosgoda turtles

Turtles are a protected species in Sri Lanka, where we can find 5 of the 8 varieties of tortoise in the world. On the south coast of the country, it is easy to see them appear on the beach at night to spawn.

Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery is a farm created to preserve this endangered species. The eggs are collected and quickly reburied in the sand to protect them from birds, crabs and humans. It also takes care of the turtles until their navel is closed and they are returned to the sea.
